Zinc and silicon biogeochemical decoupling in the North Pacific Ocean

چکیده

Abstract In the ocean, zinc (Zn) is an important element for biological activity and biogeochemistry. The distribution of dissolved Zn in global ocean similar to that silica (Si). Previous model-based experiments proposed Southern Ocean hypothesis: high Zn/P uptake ratio by phytoplankton leads Zn-depleted surface water this anomaly transported into interior associated with mode formation, resulting a Si. However, recent observational data from North Pacific showed there decoupling Si: correlation between Si breaks down Pacific. This study investigates process cycle causes using model. We conducted model experiment various speeds but it was not easy reproduce concentrations Pacific, indicating additional mechanisms are required produce By considering sources continental shelves Sea Okhotsk Bering Sea, we found concentration Zn–Si were reproduced, consistent data. Our result suggests supply coastal regions has role causing decoupling.

Physical and biogeochemical modulation of ocean acidification in the central North Pacific.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) is increasing at an accelerating rate, primarily due to fossil fuel combustion and land use change. A substantial fraction of anthropogenic CO(2) emissions is absorbed by the oceans, resulting in a reduction of seawater pH. Continued acidification may over time have profound effects on marine biota and biogeochemical cycles. Although the physical and chemical ...

Ocean acidification of the North Pacific Ocean

The addition of fossil fuel carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is rapidly changing seawater chemistry and the calcium carbonate saturation state of the world’s oceans as a result of the acidifying effects of CO2 on seawater. This acidification makes it more difficult for many marine organisms (e.g., corals, plankton, calcareous algae, and mollusks) to build skeletons, tests, and shells of calcium...

Biogeochemical modelling of the tropical Pacific Ocean . II : Iron biogeochemistry

A coupled physical–biogeochemical model of the tropical Pacific Ocean with simultaneous iron and nitrogen limitation was developed to study questions of iron biogeochemistry, its effects on upper ocean production, and ultimately the biogeochemical cycles of the other elements. The model results suggest that iron limitation is ubiquitous in the equatorial Pacific, and extends further west than i...

Relationship between depth and age in the North Pacific Ocean

[1] The North Pacific contains active mid-oceanic ridges and the oldest, Jurassic (166.8 ± 4 Ma), drilled oceanic crust. Its bathymetry is therefore critical to studies of the applicability of thermal contraction models (e.g., the infinite half-space and cooling plate) to the subsidence of seafloor with crustal age. The bathymetry, however, contains seamounts and oceanic islands (e.g., Mid-Paci...
